On 11 November 1918, the same day as the armistice that put an end to World War I, Georges Schaeren founded the Mido Watch Company, then known as Mido G. Scaheren & Co. Schaeren was a highly competent watchmaker, obtaining his diploma in a watchmaking school in Solothurn. He worked at various watchmakers up till the founding of his own company. The word mido translates to “to measure” in Spanish - a fitting name for a famed watchmaker. After all, it is the measurement of time that has fascinated men for centuries.

The Rainflower collection is a newer release from the Swiss brand. Instead of simply downsizing watches from their male collection, Mido spared no expense for the launch of the Rainflower, introducing a brand new collection of watches exclusively for women. First launched in Singapore to celebrate the brand’s 100th anniversary, the Rainflower collection was part of Mido’s #CreateYourMido participative campaign. Mido fans were invited to create the Rainflower of their dreams. Of the almost 2,500 designs received, only 4 models were chosen to make up the Rainflower collection. The collection aims to celebrate women and to reflect Mido’s characteristics of architecture design and sustainability to defy the passage of time. The Rainflower name is a delicate and subtle reference to Singapore’s ArtScience Museum, especially its distinctive shape in the form of an open lotus flower.
The Rainflower Blossom is a new range added to the Rainflower collection and was released in May 2022. It has the same set of dimensions as previous iterations of the Rainflower - measuring 34mm in diameter, 40mm lug-to-lug and a thickness of a mere 9.9mm. The diminutive case size and lug-to-lug ensure that the watch will wear beautifully on any ladies’ wrist. The case is made of high-polished solid 316L stainless steel, ensuring that the watch will be robust and corrosion-proof. The watch is also water-resistant up to 30m, an ample amount given its dressier appearance.

Skeletonised with an openwork flower mother-of-pearl dial |
The dial of the Rainflower Blossom Silver Ladies is truly remarkable. The captivating mother-of-pearl dial is adorned with an openwork flower and is half skeletonised, allowing the wearer to admire the intricate movement within. The openwork flower closely resembles the lotus flower - a hallmark of the ArtScience Museum as it is renowned for its lotus flower-like structure. Applied indices can be found on the dial, while blued skeletonised hands complete the elegant look of the watch. Marvel at the watch as light catches the mother-of-pearl dial and polished case beautifully, making the timepiece “come alive”. The Rainflower Blossom does not have a date complication and we think that it is the right move here as a date window would ruin the symmetry and refinement of the dial.
Skeleton dial watches tend to be hard to read. Mido circumvented this by fixing blued hands on the dial. The hands are highly contrasting against the white and silver mother-of-pearl dial, ensuring legibility. To further enhance legibility, a piece of flat sapphire crystal covers the dial and the crystal is also treated with an anti-reflective coating on both sides.

Flipping the watch over, you will find an exhibition caseback displaying the Mido Calibre 80. Based on the ETA C07.631, the movement’s mainplate has been specially skeletonised and decorated. It has 25 jewels, beats at 21,600 BPH and has a whopping 80 hours of power reserve. The rotor is also expertly decorated with floral motives that tie in beautifully with the exquisite theme of the watch. The Calibre 80 is a well-proven and reliable Swiss movement that will stand the test of time.
To round off the sophisticated aesthetic of the timepiece, Mido pairs the Rainflower Blossom with a high-polished 15mm beads of rice bracelet. The bracelet gently tapers to a signed Mido folding buckle. Beads of rice bracelets are extremely comfortable as they conform greatly to the wearer’s wrist. If you have not tried one on yet, you are really missing out. The polished nature of the bracelet also strengthens the charming good looks of the dress piece, making it stand out further and will definitely be an eye-catcher.
