The Swiss have been highly regarded as the pinnacle of the watch industry with a rich history of producing watches of the highest quality standards. At the top of the food chain for luxury mechanical watches, it comes as no surprise that haute horlogerie watches command astronomical prices. However, not every Swiss timepiece has to break the bank. In particular, historic Swiss watch manufacturer Mido prides themselves to produce exceptional Swiss-made watches at a surprisingly affordable price point.
Mido Multifort Mechanical - Ltd Ed 999pcs Ref. M038.605.11.060.00 |
Mido draws its inspiration for the Multifort collection from the iconic architecture of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a symbol of strength and innovation. Both the Multifort and the Harbour Bridge were created in the 1930s, sharing a legacy of durability and timeless design. The Multifort collection offers the perfect combination of style, substance, and function, reflecting the enduring spirit of this monumental bridge. With 85 years of production, the Multifort has proven to be a creation that withstands the test of time. In these few days, Mido has added another stunning member to this celebrated collection—the Mido Multifort Mechanical, further cementing the legacy of a timepiece that balances both tradition and modern craftsmanship.
Starting with the classic 44mm stainless steel case, the watch features a lug-to-lug length of 50.7mm and a thickness of 12.2mm, achieving an ideal balance between bold presence and comfortable wearability. Drawing on the legacy of the Multifort collection, which has symbolized strength and reliability since 1934, the case is beautifully finished with satin-brushed surfaces, complemented by polished horns and bezel, creating a refined yet rugged aesthetic. The domed sapphire crystal, treated with double-sided anti-reflection coatings, ensures exceptional clarity and resistance to scratches, while the push-in crown at 3 o'clock guarantees a solid 100-meter water resistance. The screwed-in exhibition caseback offers a captivating view of the precise mechanical movement inside, making this timepiece a seamless blend of timeless tradition, expert craftsmanship, and contemporary design.

Mido takes the growing trend of sketched dials—where the mechanical movement is hinted at through artistic design—and reimagines it with a fresh, accessible, and innovative approach. The Multifort Mechanical model features an anthracite dial that creates a striking "X-ray vision" effect, projecting the movement's inner mechanics onto the surface. With white Super-LumiNova, the dial traces the hidden components of the caliber, including the wheels, jewels, regulating organ, and barrel, forming a captivating outline that glows in both blue and orange in the dark. This clever use of lume, paired with the minute track on the flange and the faceted hour and minute hands also coated in Super-LumiNova, ensures superb legibility both day and night. The watch's classic display, featuring central hours and minutes, along with a small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock, is beautifully enhanced by the glowing details that transform the dial into an almost educational window into the movement's inner workings—a unique opportunity to "study" the mechanics of horology, even after the lights go out.
The Mido Multifort Mechanical is powered by the reliable ETA 6498-1 movement, originally developed by Unitas in the 1950s for pocket watches. Renowned for its large size, simplicity, and robust design, this manually wound caliber features 17 jewels and operates at a low frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz), delivering smooth, steady ticking and an impressive 46-hour power reserve. The movement seamlessly complements the watch's innovative "X-ray" dial, which visually reveals the inner workings of the timepiece, providing a unique and educational experience for the wearer. The simplicity and dependability of the ETA 6498-1 enhance the Multifort's vintage-inspired design, making this timepiece a perfect tribute to Mido's rich watchmaking heritage.
