The 1960s is widely known as the golden era for watches, especially for dive watches. As the technology for diving equipment advances, the demand for watches with increased diving capabilities becomes increasingly crucial. As one of the pioneers of dive watches, Seiko holds a rich history in developing reliable and robust timekeeping instruments for the most serious professional divers. Seiko gained enormous respect from divers all around the world, setting a global standard with their advanced horological innovations.
In 1965, Seiko unevilled Japan's first ever dive watch - the legendary 150 meters automatic Seiko Ref. 62MAS. This paved the way for many incredible Seiko dive watches in the subsequent years that remain iconic even until today. One of the most prominent models would be the highly sought after Seiko Ref. 6159-7001, released in 1968 as Japan's first hi-beat diver distinguished by the high-frequency caliber that operates at 36,000 beats per hour for greater precision.

Seiko Prospex Mechanical Divers 1968 Heritage GMT Shohei Ohtani - Ltd Ed 1700pcs Ref. SBEJ023 |
The first reiteration of the 6159-7001 came along with Ref. SBDC061 and SBDC063 "Baby MM" which has since been discontinued and replaced with the upgraded "Baby MM Reduced" Ref. SBDC127 /SBP 187 and Ref. SBDC125 / SPB185 which took design cues from the MM300. Fast forward to 2023, Seiko spiced up its Seiko 5 collection introducing a GMT function powered by the new 4R36 movement.
Riding the GMT wave, Seiko expands its Prospex collection with another striking mechanical GMT diver. Kicking off 2025 with a bold statement, the brand introduces a special edition of the Mechanical Divers 1968 Heritage GMT, originally launched in 2023 as the first GMT in the Prospex lineup. This time, Seiko collaborates with Los Angeles Dodgers phenomenon Shohei Ohtani for a limited-edition release, the Mechanical Divers 1968 Heritage GMT Shohei Ohtani 2025 Limited Edition Ref. SBEJ023, blending the brand's renowned dive watch heritage with Ohtani's dynamic presence, making it a must-have for collectors and fans alike.
The case of the Prospex GMT Divers Shohei Ohtani Ref. SBEJ023 continues the classic case design reminiscent of the MM300, recognized for its solid shoulders, angular shapes, crown at 4 o'clock, wide bezel, strong lines all around the case beautifully finished with a mix of polished surfaces.

The top of the lugs are meticulously finished with satin brushing that dips downwards to a high polish mirror finish on the side of the case. A streak of brushed finishing across the side of the case divides the polished finishing to create a handsome contrast between the finishes, making the watch look incredibly refined.
The case retains a well-balanced 42mm diameter, now refined with improved ergonomics and a stronger emphasis on comfort, thanks to its shorter lugs. Prospex Diver fans will appreciate the sleeker proportions, with a reduced lug-to-lug measurement of 48.6mm and a relatively slim 12.9mm profile—impressive given the added GMT functionality. On the wrist, the watch wears more compact than its dimensions suggest, offering an elegant presence that transitions effortlessly from adventure-ready tool watch to a refined companion for dressier occasions. The stainless steel case is treated with Seiko's proprietary DiaShield hard coating, giving it a stealthy blackout profile that not only enhances scratch resistance but also adds a bold, rugged aesthetic with an undeniably cool edge.

The screw-down crown, proudly engraved with Ohtani's iconic number 17, sits at the 4 o'clock position, adding a personal touch to this remarkable timepiece. Paired with a screw-down case back, the watch boasts an ISO-certified 200-meter water resistance to be a functional companion for underwater adventures.
Zirconia ceramic bezel inserts has been used exclusively on elite Prospex divers. Comes in the Dodger Blue colorway, the Prospex GMT Divers Shohei Ohtani Ref. SBEJ023 joins this segment with a blue zirconia ceramic bezel insert that resembles the insert first introduced on the MM300 SBDX023. Mated to a 120-click unidirectional diving bezel finished with white makers and numerals exerting a glossy shine for an opulent look.
The iconic Dodger Blue seamlessly flows onto the dial, creating a striking contrast against the matte black backdrop while preserving the legendary layout of the Seiko Ref. 6159-7001. Large, highly legible indexes and broad hands, generously filled with Seiko's renowned Lumibrite, ensure unparalleled visibility, glowing like a torch in the dark. To maintain the functionality of a traditional 60-minute dive bezel, a 24-hour scale has been cleverly integrated into the inner flange, working in harmony with the central red GMT hand. A standout detail: Ohtani's signature number 17 appears in bold red on the inner rehaut, further emphasizing the watch's exclusivity. Protecting the dial sits a piece of boxed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the underside.

Seiko's LumiBrite at its best |
Under the impressive exterior of the Prospex GMT Divers Shohei Ohtani Ref. SBEJ023 lies the premium Seiko 6R54 movement, which is equipped with 72 hours of power reserve. The central 24 hour hand can be set independently and functions as the "Travel Time". The 24 jewel movement has a 3 Hz beat rate of 21,600 beats per hour. Secured by a screw-down case back, the watch proudly features an engraving of "SHOHEI OHTANI LIMITED EDITION" alongside its unique serial number, reinforcing its exclusivity and collectibility.
The timepiece is completed with a meticulously crafted 20mm stainless steel bracelet, finely finished to match the case's intricate details and equipped with a diver's extension for quick, on-the-go adjustments. To further elevate its exclusivity, Ohtani's signature is elegantly engraved in silver tone on the clasp, transforming this watch into a true collector's piece that seamlessly combines exceptional functionality with a personal tribute to the baseball legend.
This new addition to the Prospex line is a true milestone for Seiko, showcasing the brand's unrivaled craftsmanship and innovative design. While it's not Seiko's first collaboration with Ohtani (the Prospex Diver SBDC191 in 2023 holds that honor), this marks the first time Ohtani has teamed up with Seiko since joining the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Prospex GMT Divers Shohei Ohtani Ref. SBEJ023 is a limited edition of just 1,700 pieces, making it an exclusive treasure for collectors. With a timeless design reimagined with contemporary upgrades, this watch not only challenges the legendary MM300 but offers an unbeatable combination of performance, style, and value. The collaboration with Ohtani adds an extra layer of prestige, ensuring this timepiece is as much a tribute to a global sports icon as it is a bold statement of Seiko's excellence.
