From a heritage brand like Hamilton, modern re-interpretations of their past retro models has been the direction they are going in many recent releases, reviving them with Swiss watchmaking capabilities of the 21st century. In 2017, Hamilton unveiled the limited edition American Classic Intra-Matic Chrono 68 based on the Hamilton Chronograph B from 1968, a gorgeous release well-received by vintage watch enthusiasts. This time round, the Intra-Matic Chronograph recaptures the golden age of sports chronographs, bringing back the unparalleled haptic pleasure of a hand-wound timepiece.
The Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph Auto returns with a refreshed 2-piece 316L stainless steel case, now featuring an integrated bezel for a more seamless and refined profile compared to the previous 3-piece construction. While the overall thickness remains around 14.45mm, the new architecture results in a slimmer visual profile, with the boxed sapphire crystal contributing to the height. The watch maintains excellent wearability with its balanced 40mm diameter and 49.2mm lug-to-lug distance, sitting comfortably on a variety of wrists. This latest version stands out with an all-black PVD coating, offering a stealthy, rugged look topped off with a clean matte finish.

Distinct oversized pushers and a grippy crown on the right side of the case are hallmark features of the Intra-Matic Chronograph, delivering a ton of retro charm while offering a satisfyingly tactile experience when operating the chronograph or winding the movement. Enhancing its vintage-sporty appeal, a 20mm perforated leather strap with a bold splash of vibrant orange channels the spirited style of 1970s racing chronographs. The look is completed with a blackout Hamilton-signed pin buckle, tying together the watch's sleek, throwback aesthetic with a modern edge.
The retro charm of the Intra-Matic Chronograph Auto lies in its full black dial, which stays true to vintage cues with a clean, symmetrical dual-register layout—running seconds on the left and a 30-minute totalizer on the right. Both matte black sub-dials subtly blend into the background, brought to life with fine snailing for added depth and texture. A tachymeter scale with a black background and vibrant orange printed markers wraps around the dial's periphery, echoing the spirit of Hamilton's iconic Chrono-Matic. Matching the scale, the minute hand is accented with a bold pop of orange, injecting just the right amount of color to enliven the dial. At 6 o'clock, a discreet white-on-black date display preserves the overall symmetry. Completing the look are applied 60s-style hour markers and a period-correct handset, both treated with modern Super-LumiNova for excellent nighttime legibility.
