In 1983, a barnacle-covered, Citizen Challenge Diver from 1977 was retrieved from an Australian beach. Much to the wide-eyed surprise of its discoverers, this watch was still running as if nothing had happened as its case protected its movement from water and dirt. This awe-inspiring find inspired Citizen’s newest dive watch, the Promaster Mechanical Diver 200M Blue Ref. NB6021-68L, which is a modern take on the original 1977 dive watch.

This new dive watch evokes a nautical, old-school look and has dimensions alluding to the original 70s timepiece. However, the NB6021-68L has been contemporized in major areas via updated materials and technology, as well as is ISO 6425 compliant. Moreover, the NB6021-68L is completely made of Super Titanium, treated with the brand’s proprietary Duratect hardening technology. After all, Citizen was the pioneer watch manufacturer to manufacture a titanium-made watch that was commercially available in 1970. Back then, titanium was used in the space and aeronautical industries. Over time, Super Titanium, a registered trademark combining the brand’s titanium processing technologies and Duratect surface hardening process, was developed. Therefore this watch is way more scratch resistant and resilient than steel and can last for a very long time.
The case of the lightweight NB6021-68L measures 41mm in diameter and 12.3mm in height. Although the unidirectional bezel may appear a bit wider than the middle case, both have precisely the same width. The brushed finishing on the case and the polished outer surface of the bezel is also aesthetically captivating. Furthermore, the bezel has a spot-on alignment, ensuring safe diving.

The ocean-inspired, nautical blue dial bedecked with rectangular indices is doused with luminous material in a retro green hue and emits a stunning glow and is visible during the day and when charged by direct sunlight. A Mercedes-style hour hand, a sword-shaped minute hand and a seconds hand that are doused with the same green glowing luminous material unambiguously indicate the time. A flat-top sapphire crystal, with a beveled edge and a domed underside covers the timepiece. The date window is situated at the 3 o’clock index and is outlined in white.
A Caliber 9051 movement powers the watch by the release of a wound spring. Such an automatic mechanical movement has an oscillating weight that winds the spring with the motion of the wearer’s arm. This automatic movement operates at a frequency of 28,800vph and uses 24 jewels. It provides a decent 42h power reserve and is regulated to run within -10 to +20 seconds of deviation per day. A robust titanium caseback conceals the movement from the wearer. Magnetic-resistant, the watch also guards against possible timekeeping deviations as a result of other surrounding electronic devices.
