Marathon Watch might be new to some, but not to military watch fanatics like us. This Swiss watchmaker has been well-received by collectors as one of the few brands that craft timepieces for militaries, including the United States and Canadian armies, for almost 70 years.
Delving into the rich history of this watchmaker, we discovered that the brand we now know to be Marathon was founded in 1904 as Weinsturm Watch, which was later renamed Wein Brothers. In 1939, Morris Wein founded the brand and supplied fine timepieces famed for their precision throughout North America. Since the 1940s, Marathon has been manufacturing time instruments for the Allied Forces. Inspired by the General Purpose watches developed for Allied forces in 1941 with direct lineage to the GG-W-113 Spec in the 60s, the Jeep x Marathon Series introduced the new Jeep Willys SSGPM Officer's Mechanical Ref. WW194033SS-4001.

The SSGPM starts with its 316L stainless steel case that measures 41mm wide, with an incredible 11mm thickness and 48mm lug to lug. Further, the finishing of the case gets a full matte finish, removing any source of inessential reflections in this case, while still being immaculately executed, much like the SSNAV series. But where it separates itself is the lack of bezel, magnifying the dial and making it appear wider. The dimension of the timepiece allows one to feel its sturdiness and being built with all sense of purpose, to be out in the field.
Moving to the case profile, The SSGPM has from a sleek and a sense of masculine attractiveness to it to its unique bold case design that you do not see much in the market. The case has an asymmetrical shape and uniquely removes the crown guard and bezel in the design, providing a cleaner and streamlined look. With easier crown manipulation and comfort, the watch provides an option for more minimalistic design. This in which allows one to feel the case has a wider side from the other, which made it a pretty darn cool and tactical feel. When the watch viewed from the front, it lets off only as a no-frill tool watch, only to be complemented by its short lugs. However, when one views it from the top, it is where it shines with its unique case profile, with the lugs streamline together as a whole with its masculine yet unique side profile. This results in a striking silhouette, letting the wearer feel substantial with its asymmetrical case. With a water resistance of 50m, the watch is made for everyday wear, filling itself as part of the General Purpose Field Series.
Made in Switzeland, Approved by US Government |
As designed for a General Purpose Field watch, the dial opts for a more minimalistic, no nonsense design which deviates from most Marathon models. The dial features modernized update on the original WWII dial. It features a fresh black dial with fully-lumed Aged-Radium color numerals for the vintage look. Not forgetting the sword hands and red second hand that brings this watch to life which is balanced by a Jeep logo at the 12 and “Marathon, Mechanical, 18 Jewels” at the 6. All held together by a minute track rehaut and a flat sapphire crystal, this watch can suit itself up for any occasion.
The SSGPM is powered by the Sellita's 19-jewelled SW210-1 mechanisms. This hand-wound movement is proposed in its upgraded Elaboré and decorated finish with blue screws and Geneva stripes. Renowned for its precision and reliability, this Swiss caliber features hours, minutes and seconds functions and a mechanical winding mechanism precisely regulated at a daily rate of +/- 7 seconds. The watch features 42 hours of power reserve that beats at 28,800 vph (4hz) with shock absorbing properties. Equipped with a screw-in caseback which features all the specifications of the watch along with the highlights of “Jeep x Marathon” logo and the slogan “Since 1941, Go Anywhere. Do Anything.”.
